Smith ’76 to Lead the NC Conference of Clerks of Superior Court

Archie L. Smith III, Durham County Clerk of Superior Court, was installed as President of the N.C. Conference of Clerks of Superior Court on August 20, 2014. N.C. Supreme Court Chief Justice Sarah Parker administered the Oath of Office in a ceremony conducted during the summer conference of the Conference of Clerks in New Bern, N.C. Smith, a Durham County native, was elected Clerk of Superior Court for Durham County in September, 2002 and took office on December 2, 2002. He attended the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill where he received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English in 1972. In 1976, he graduated from North Carolina Central University School of Law and practiced law in Durham County for more than twenty-six years before his election as Clerk of Superior Court. In October, 2002, the N.C. Board of Law Examiners passed a Resolution of Appreciation on behalf of Smith’s twenty six years of service to the board. In addition to his civic activities as a member of the Board of Directors of The Durham Sports Club and as Master of Oak Grove Masonic Lodge #750, he also currently serves as the representative for the Clerks of Court on the N.C. State Judicial Council. He resides in Durham with his wife, Rebecca.
